Michael - I think you may have misread Didiers query; note the
distinction between:

  # simply prints the version of *initctl*.
  /sbin/initctl --version

  # talks to upstart over D-Bus and prints the version of *Upstart*
  /sbin/initctl version

Didier - yes, Upstart does indeed return the string "upstart" in the
latter scenario. On an Ubuntu Precise system:

$ /sbin/initctl version 2>/dev/null
init (upstart 1.5)
