I've noticed this same error lately:
% totem ; echo $?

exist

...note that 'totem' was launched while my system was online. Check
if this site or service exists:
% host org.freedesktop.Hal
org.freedesktop.Hal does not exist, try again
% whois org.freedesktop.Hal
No whois server is known for this kind of object.
