Ok, this all looks fine. You said the problem started after the recent kernel upgrade. Did you hibernate while you still had the old kernel loaded? Does it work if you boot using the new/upgraded kernel? pm-utils ships a hook /etc/kernel/postinst.d/pm-utils, which creates a file /var/run/do-not-hibernate. pm-hibernate checks for that file and refuses to hibernate if it finds it.
