I tried this one-line patch with the version of forcedeth.c in
kernel-source-2.6.8 2.6.8-16 of Sarge:

Patching the old version 0.29 of the forcedeth driver was not enough to
fix the situation. dmesg still shows:
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth1: transmit timed out
nv_stop_tx: TransmitterStatus remained busy<7>eth1: tx_timeout: dead entries!
