I get similar error message as Martin above using firefox 1.0.4 from stable:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050925 Firefox/1.0.4 (Debian package 1.0.4-2sarge5) Situation: I had mozilla-browser,-psm installed. Decided to try out firefox. Installed it and some extensions. Firefox kept asking about master password when saving web forum passwords. Of course I did not remember that, so I removed moz-browser, moz-psm etc and firefox. Deleted ~/.mozilla and its subdirectories. Re-installed mozilla-firefox. Now firefox would no longer install extensions. Re-installed mozilla-browser, and deleted ~/.mozilla again. When I started firefox, I found that I can install extensions again! Maybe mozilla-browser or mozilla-psm changes something so firefox works again? ...................................................................
