Probably something that is waaay beyond the scope of this bug, but has the translation group considered using a rsync spot like tp.org does? That means when I am about to release a package I just do something like rsync -Lrtvz translationproject.org::tp/latest/DOMAIN/ po and all of the latest .po files are in my directory.
