afm files provides the metrics for the characters, without them the display looks bad. The X server (at least at some point int the past) searched for the afm files in the same directory as the pfb/pfa files.
So it'd be a better idea to symlink all the relevant .pfb and .afm files into /usr/share/fonts/type1 than adding their directories to fontconfig's search pattern, right?
