It's probably easier to do this on the nvidia-glx package, which is a metapackage that pulls in several other nvidia packages via versioned dependencies and apt probably presents fewer conflicts to be resolved. aptitude install nvidia-glx -t unstable Besides that, I have nothing to add to Diederick's explanation.
