The problem actually still exists for 2.6.32 [linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64], so it seems less likely to be something that can be discovered by a bisect. I've since run 8 passes of a memtest (~6 hours) with no failures, which has made me more convinced that it's a software issue. I suppose for a better comparison I'd need to leave it running for a week or so (without any freezing issues). In that case, I guess it's a 32-bit/64-bit issue. I'm considering reverting the system to a 32-bit kernel (it only has 1.5GB memory) because it's difficult to predict when the CPU freezes will happen, and I've had to hard-shutdown the computer a few times via the power button.
