So the answer is "no, live-build doesn't support it". Also, that would definitely not work for a downgrade (--distribution wheezy fails, so user tries a --distribution squeeze build afterwards). I will definitely not document or recommend this procedure, then, and stand by my assertion that I see no reason the patch could not be accepted as-is.
