I experience this bug when connected to a local AFP server (running OS X Tiger). As a client on Debian, I can connect and everything works fine until I disconnect the network on the server side. Then Debian's cpu shoots up to 100% and top reveals the process is gvfsd-afp-browse. I've repeated it several times and it didn't matter whether the network volumes were still mounted on my Debian desktop or unmounted. The only solution was to kill the process.
