That happens because "Space" is not for reading/scrolling messages. "Space" is used to "Scroll Down Current Message, then Go to Next Unread Message". https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts#w_moving-around-thunderbird There is a uncomfortable way to work around this, try to use "F6" and the "Up" and "Down" keys.
