I contacted the maintainer 2005-09-25 about this issue, and got a reply the same day telling me that he had been waiting for the KDE and Qt libraries to get sorted out, and would do an upload with a new release in 1-2 weeks.
Today I was asked what happened with my NMU, and realised that I forgot to mention this in the BTS report. So I do no longer plan to do an NMU, but might reconsider if no new version of avifile show up soon.
