In  Debian Squeeze workstation with KDE and Gnome (also kdm and gdm3
or gdm installed) /usr/bin/who shows the user who logged onto Gnome
only through gdm or gdm3. And output of /usr/bin/who have 2 lines for
user who logged onto KDE trough gdm or gdm3.
And /usr/bin/who output have no lines for user who logged onto Gnome
trough kdm and have 1 line if user logged onto KDE trough kdm.

Coreutils only reports what is logged in /var/run/utmp; it is up to the desktop environment or terminal window to record the login.
