I'm really sorry I didn't get home timely enough to reply to the private
mail you sent earlier.
I won't apply the mentioned patch if there's no support for it in the
kernel.
As you told in the previous (private) mail you already contacted the
upstream author who said he won't apply the patch either because the
IOCTL you need does not currently exists in vanilla (and Debian)
kernels.
So I suppose that your best bet would be to submit the kernel patch to
Linux kernel developers (on lkml) and be patient. :)
If it will be accepted also upstream might have no problem in applying
your patch (and it will be easier to see your patch backported in Debian
if neccessary, for obvious reasons I'd be asking for it too).
In the meantime you could provide your own patched
xfree86-driver-synaptics through other means (apt-get.org,
mentors.debian.net, etc.), building it is just a matter of
apt-get source xfree86-driver-synaptics && \
cd synaptics-0.14.3 && \
patch -p1 < ../your_patch && \
dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -rfakeroot
oh, and maybe rename the package to avoid confusion (it's just a
little more work than I wrote).
