Mm, sorry, I misunderstood the rationale for this slightly before, but I understand better now. This is really the fault of the Debian-specific gfxpayload_keep_default patch; I'm going to revert a small part of that which was responsible for disabling video module loading and hence prevented the screen_info structure from being set up properly on entry to Linux.
