It's absolutely OK, you would be most welcome to adopt it. Are you subscribed to gimp-print-devel and debian-printing? Both would be required to track upstream stuff and other Debian printing coordination. The package is all in the git repo on Alioth. Do you have access to collab-maint on Alioth?
