Hi Sergei, thanks, that solution works for me. Am using meshlab to convert the stl file as suggested. I didn't know that there was more than one type of STL file.
Yes, the flickering was related to the xorg driver, (now fixed was only apparent in wings3d out of the programs I was using). thanks very much. I think that this bug could be closed now.
