I think this is probably not a bug as such but occurred because I had both vim-athena and vim-gtk installed - not sure why. Gvim was calling vim-athena instead of vim-gtk. I think vim-athena had got installed automatically at some stage; it is not there on another computer that also runs Sid.
Anyway, deleting vim-athena makes everything work correctly. Sorry for any confusion here.
