Indeed. In principle, it is always better to use /usr/local/share/texmf
for additions that are not under dpkg's control.

Hmm, that means that tetex-extra has not been configured correctly.

Please, don't use this option (see #334658 and #334747), since this
creates the file /usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg. Please delete that
file. Now would be a good time to configure tetex-extra. Or, if you did
this already, call 'update-updmap', 'mktexlsr', and 'updmap-sys'.
