Thanks, I added a line to debian/rules of coreutils instead:

mv $(d)/usr/share/man/man1/kill.1 $(d)/usr/share/man/man1/kill.coreutils.1

coreutils (5.2.1-2) apparently has its own kill now, /usr/bin/kill
