Yes, but the explanation was a little short and i was not certain you
mrant that.
Also yes you have to have desktop-file-utils for the applications to
register properly (as Loic told) and anutilus to add new apllications to
a mime type.
The former will hopefully be fixed by cleaning the dependencies but the
former have no fix. There is no editor for the new freedesktop mime
system (except nautilus but it s a border effect of one of its
fonctionality).
As far as i know upstream don't intend to readd a mime editor per se.
But galeon already have a system like nautilus. WHen you open a file
type not managed by galeon it popup a window asking to open or save but
one can expand it to show other registered applications. Maybe adding a
"other application" field could fix you second issue (opening with
xpdf).
