With the same hardware, several audio bugs I experienced in Debian 7.0 not present in Debian 6.0 appear directly linked to the addition of PulseAudio. The Debian bug log system already documents dozens more such PulseAudio bugs. However, gnome-core now includes a dependency on the bug ridden pulseaudio. Without an option to remove or replace pulseaudio, Debian 7.0 breaks applications that reveal bugs in pulseaudio, yielding audio too unreliable to be useful in several cases and offering no straightforward means of a reliable transition from Debian 6.0. For reference, the gnome-core of Debian 6.0 does not include a dependency on pulseaudio. This dependency must be eliminated from the gnome of Debian 7.0 or an alternative option that relies on ALSA or another sound configuration must be provided to avoid destroying reliable audio functionality. While gnome-core (along with gnome and task-gnome-desktop) may simply be removed, creating and adding a dependency on a alternative gnome audio configuration that works as well as the audio did with Debian 6.0 will save resources and time for existing Debian users who upgrade to Debian 7.0 and realize that their applications perform poorly with pulseaudio.
