No, I used apt from aptitude/synaptic/whatever.

I think the reason for not creating /usr/bin/vim _now_ is that you
already have /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/vim. Still I've no idea about
why it did not create it during the upgrade.

Uhm ... that's mine: the old gvim diversion need to be removed in some
preinst. Could you please check if you also have /etc/alternatives/gvim?
