No, this is the normal PC partitioning scheme and the root partition can be on any of the partitions. The "extended" partition has historical reasons: the original PC partition table layout allowed only four ("primary") partitions. To be able to address more than four, the so-called "extended partition" was invented, which is in principle a normal partition with an additional sub-partitiontable and sub-partitions ("logical drives") inside the partition. For the Linux kernel it does not make a difference whether to use a "primary" partition or a "logical drive".

So what could be preventing the new kernel from even running the linuxrc script, or at the very least preventing it from showing the output from the extra "echo" line which I added to it.
