i had to dismiss my original "well, it's probably >1.9 only" assumption,
because when i invoke the original lolcat with ruby1.8, everything works
flawlessly -- only after a patch removes the 'require "rubygems"' line
("it can causestrange effects"), things go bad.
i'm not familiar enough with ruby to see what's wrong immediately, and
will ask the team for help unless i find the problem before.
