Ok, I guess it is the >2GiB size that is problematic and not the
sparseness. I assume that problem is unlikely to change in the near
future, so what about modifying the unit test to test if it runs on hurd
and just exit with success in that case?
something like switching on the output from uname or so. or possibly
disabling the unit test on hurd-i386?

I do not know what you think is the easiest way forward. It would be
nice to see this bug 711973 go away so libc can be built.
