Years ago I taught a course at the University of New Mexico and one of
the students was from a local tribe. In chatting with after a lecture,
after she'd asked about the origins of my name, I asked: "Emily
Swimming-Fawn, is that a Native American name?" She gently said: "It
is an Indian name."

It is their choice what to call themselves. And I think some of them
may have had quite enough of Europeans telling them what they're
supposed to call themselves.

(Before you get all pedantic about the Indian subcontinent and correct
nomenclature and how "Indian" isn't accurate, recall that technically
the proper term would be "Aboriginal American." Which is not even on
the table.)
