I would opt against adding more and more special versions of general
checks. Instead I'm thinking about changing the check_smtp command
definition into:

# 'check_smtp' command definition
define command {
        command_name    check_smtp
        command_line    /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_smtp -H
'$HOSTADDRESS$' '$ARG1$'
}

With this you have the possibility to do:

check_smtp!'--starttls -D 30,10'

and:

check_smtp!'--starttls -D 30,10 -p 587'

even much more ... but the best thing is, it is backward compatible to
the actual command definition.

Cheers, Jan.
