Update on a squeeze backport: Turns out to really make it work you'll need to apply patch
0034-fix_dovecot_authentication.patch from 2.1.25.dfsg1-6+deb7u1, too. Otherwise the second line (with "OK", the interesting part) is not even read from the server socket. That patch applies without modifications. To turn it into .dpatch file, anyone interested can use the "dpatch patch-template ..." command.
