The above bug report helped me do a temporary work-around. I had to manually edit the identities and set a transport. This isn't a solution to the problem as now I have identities not using the default transport so things probably won't work as desired if I change my default transport at some future time. Also it seems intermittent and it's broken again. I had kmail running at the time I upgraded the Debian packages, but this shouldn't result in configuration files that are corrupt and don't work.
