Hi Peter,
This seems to be two bugs in one! Please consider filing a separate bug
report for the occasional crash when merging (if it is still happening
to you). We would need more information about exactly what was being
merged, and any error reports to track down that problem.
Back to the feature request. I am not sure it is a good idea to merge
families. Although there is talk that the idea of a family consisting of
two parents of opposite sex is either a little outdated, or not even
applicable to some cultures where a man can have many wives, if you
merged two families then you may end up with more than two parents, and
possibly many duplicate children. Do you mean that you would like to be
able to take all the people from two separate families, merge the two
fathers, merge the two mothers, and merge any children from both
families that seem to be the same - in one step? Should all the family
events be merged as well at the same time (e.g. the marriage)? You would
still need to do some unpicking after this, as there may have been some
children that are the same person, but had slightly different names, or
birth/baptism dates. And there may be duplicates in the events attached
to each person in the family, or any duplicate parents of the parents in
the new family. Personally, when I am in this situation, I prefer to
work one person at a time. It can be very confusing when you bring two
people's research together in one tree. Once each person is separately
merged and all events sorted out, then you can just remove each person
from one of the duplicate families, and then delete it.
Let me know what you think. I will be happy to forward your feature
request to the upstream authors. However, they are all volunteers, and
if it is a well thought out request it stands more chance of being taken
forward.
Regards,
Ross
