I honestly have no any idea why this is happening. MAT calls exiftool for cleaning/checking images, using the subprocess.Popen and subprocess.call Python functions, and both are waiting for process termination.
I pushed a patch which should improve this behaviour, and hopefully fix (as a side effect) this problem.
