This "feature request" was a rather stupid idea... :-) Meanwhile I settled on setting the SHELL environment variable in my .xsessionrc. That feels a lot more elegant and secure to me. So I'll still be able to login with a fallback shell as defined in /etc/passwd on tty[1-6] and use ZSH when working under X.
