Hello, Eventually I found a workaround.
I used "update-rc.d <service> disable" to disable services until startpar would exit. I found that if the /etc/init.d/kdm script was enabled, startpar would hang, but if it was disabled, console 1 would offer a login. I solved my boot problem by installing lightdm.
