Paul, can you please take a look at bug #152160 in Debian (http://bugs.debian.org/152160). It's about unexpected command line argument parsing in GNU tar. I seem to recall you sending a reply back when I filed this bug arguing (convincingly) that GNU tar does the right thing, but it's neither in the bug log nor can I find it in my private archives. Maybe I'm mixing stuff up with another bug report.
