As far as I know, lxappearance was designed to work with lxsession if it is running, or use config files directly if no lxsession is used.
Now lxappearance correctly gets settings from lxsession, (or ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/desktop.conf) But it writes to ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini, as if lxsession is not running.
