With the exception of libtiff4-dev this patch actually just _removes_
alternative build-dependencies. I never understood why Ubuntu did
that. Can you elaborate?

Actually I already asked a similar question in that bug, but I never
got an answer from the original bug reporter.

For now I consider applying the following patch:
- libtiff4-dev,
+ libtiff5-dev | libtiff-dev,
since libpng-dev, libjpeg-dev, and libtiff-dev are only virtual
packages and I vaguely remember that the use of non-virtual
build-dependencies is preferred over virtual ones.
(Feel free to correct me here, as I can't remember the source for
that, but it was a buildd-related issue.)
