Just wanted to add that this bug is still active in Debian 7.1.
With a Verbatim 1TB HD I was able to mount and manipulate files. After removing the external drive and then plugging it back in it came up with the unprivileged user error. Commenting out the mentioned USB lines did solve the problem. Installation was through USB net install.
