I had this problem with ibus-el 0.3.0-2 (in wheezy). > (require 'ibus) I have this in my ~/.emacs: (require 'ibus) (add-hook 'after-init-hook 'ibus-mode-on) (add-hook 'after-init-hook 'ibus-mode) This gives me a minor mode of "IBus" and lets me switch ibus on and off as much as I want.
