The downside being that short circuits get_file which is where a lot of dget's functionality resides (copying/hard linking files from local caches, etc.). One could argue that “apt-get download” could be enhanced to provide some of this functionality, but in the mean time that'd be a regression in functionality. I haven't looked into any of the Perl wrappers around apt to see if they can replace some of the manual parsing we're doing in dget, but that would be a good middle ground.
