This is not normal but the reason might be anything which brings the daemon() function to fall. If the logs are also empty then I assume that you messed something up with your environment, maybe with the permissions or even with the kernel (like not enabling PTY support or so). If you don't know for sure, use "strace -f". I am downgrading your report now because this message should really include the errno value (decoded to a readable error message).
