Well, AIUI, we do have the xenl behavior: echo -ne 'asdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdf\na' on a 80cols screen will show up as asdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdfasdf a on the screen, without an empty line.
