package python-coverage severity 728824 minor thanks On 05-Nov-2013, Barry Warsaw wrote: > Currently, these JavaScript libraries are Recommends, but it might be > better to demote them to Suggests.
I'll state up front that if there's a reason it's better, then the reasoning needs to be primarily that it's better in Debian, regardless of other OSes. > One reason for doing so would allow Ubuntu to use the Debian version of > the package without carrying a delta (in general, a goal of mine!). Agreed, I would like to produce a Debian package that is useable as-is by all Debian derivatives. For decisions about how to change this Debian package, convenience for Debian derivatives is important, but must be secondary compared to what is right for Debian users. > The problem in Ubuntu is that python-coverage is in main but the libjs > packages are in universe and because apt-get installs Recommends by > default, this kind of cross-repo dependency is frowned upon. Okay. I agree that the cross-repository dependency in Ubuntu is to be avoided. I think the Debian dependencies should not change to address that, though. > (We might be able to promote the libjs packages to main, but it's not > guaranteed to be acceptable to the Ubuntu admins.) Fair enough. At the moment, though, I am not inclined to let that consideration affect the assessment of what the dependencies should be for this package in Debian. Thanks for raising this bug report. This issue is worth discussion in the context of Debian, and I'll follow up in another message. -- \ “You've got the brain of a four-year-old boy, and I'll bet he | `\ was glad to get rid of it.” —Groucho Marx | _o__) | Ben Finney <[email protected]>
