Apologies for the delay in looking into this Have you considered sending this upstream? It seems like generally useful functionality, and not something which warrants being only in Debian. If you don't have a github account I can submit a pull request on your behalf, but it would probably be best for you to do it in the event of upstream questions or suggested changes.
