You are right - if it is data that is going to be written here, it really does not make much sense to insist on a read-only $HOME. One can always redirect $XDG_DATA_HOME to some other location.
That seems to be the most sensible solution indeed. Perhaps to something under /tmp.
Thank you for helping me. I think we can refrain from forwarding that request, and thus give the developers some time back so that they are able to develop some desired features and/or fix real bugs :)
