Package: gimp Version: 2.8.2-2 Followup-For: Bug #694721 Dear Maintainer, Even after installing gimp-help-en I am unable to get any help in gimp, local or remote. This seems more than a trivial problem, though perhaps it was triggered by the exact sequence of my actions.
* What led up to the situation? Installed and ran gimp, opening a png image to edit. Selected help | context help from the menu and then clicked on one of the brushes in the paintbrush window. This warning came up <popup> Could not open 'http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-help.xml' for reading: The specified location is not supported Perhaps you are missing GIO backends and need to install GVFS? </popup> Unlike the original poster I have not explicitly set any help options or requested remote help. Note I'm running under KDE. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? With aptitude installed gimp-help-en (oddly, there were 2 entries with the same version number), which also installed gimp-help-common. *While* the installl was in progress I tried help again (general help, not context help, I think) and got the same message. After installation tried help again, same error. Shut down and restarted help. Tried context help again, same error. I tried opening http://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-help.xml in iceweasel. It did retrieve a page, though it was unformatted. * What was the outcome of this action? Warning dialogue shown above. * What outcome did you expect instead? Help, preferably locally or at least remote. The workaround is to visit the gimp web site. BTW, the reason I wanted help was that I wanted to change the size of the star paintbrush; when I open the properties dialogue for it all the controls are greyed out. Theory: gimp-help is missing dependencies.
