Right, it's gone, and upstream does not support it any more because it
is technically the wrong solution and in-kernel loading the only
supported option.

It can all pretty trivially be made to run in userspsce like it did
(unreliably in some cases) in the past, but the kernel and udev will
need to be patched to do that.
