Hello I've tested Niko's proposal to use Inline::C's CFLAGSEX instead of CFLAGS. This does indeed fix the issue on i386: xs_effects.pl is working fine on i386.
I've also tried on amd64 without problems. I'll apply this fix on Debian package, which will later land in Ubuntu. Shlomi, I really think that this small patch should be applied upstream to make SDL with Inline more robust on other systems.
