I have encountered same issue on my desktop: my card reader, connected to USB bus, was detected by system and listed by lsusb, but SD cards I put in it were not detected. I noticed though cards were not detected upon insertion (nothing related to the subject in dmesg, no new block devices /dev/sda created), but after editing /etc/fstab (commenting and commenting out an unrelated string), system recognised them right after saving the document. The issue was resolved by appending "echo 2000 > /sys/module/block/parameters/events_dfl_poll_msecs" to /etc/rc.local. I'm using Debian Testing, used Kubuntu 13.04 previously, card reader functioned properly.
